Maria Bang Espersen

The seven selected porcelain series are presented in the form of a museum exhibition for historical objects. However, each porcelain object is stuck in the stand itself instead of being placed inside it as is customary. This clash has caused the glass to crack and reveals the destructive power of the porcelain objects and at the same time comments on the fragility of conventional museum presentations. Norse Mythologies guides us through the stories and marketing behind the products and thus helps reveal its construction.

The exhibition also shows the video installation When you are in the middle of it which consists of three synchronized screens showing footage from five Danish residential areas that, when filmed in 2018, had been classed as ghettos by the Danish government. The video also presents residents' own comments and thoughts on the “Ghetto Plan” and its discriminatory and alienating effect on groups of people in Danish society.

Maria Bang Espersen (b. 1981 in Holstebro, Denmark) is a Danish artist who since 2019 is active in Boda, Småland. She holds a master's degree in fine arts from the California Institute of the Arts (2017) and a craft degree from Den Kongelige Danske Designakademi on Bornholm (2012). She is also educated at Kosta Glasskola (2009). Bang Espersen has exhibited internationally at numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Henry Moore Institute, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum, Houston Contemporary Craft Center, Toyama Glass Art Museum, and Finnish Glass Museum. Bang Espersen's work is included in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Corning Museum of Glass, Rakusui-tei Art Museum and Gardens, and the collection of the Danish Arts Council.
